Written by Gail Morrison Caprio in memory of Jonathan Cameron Shine (1947-1971)

It isn't easy to summarize Jon's short life. His influence ws emphatic and far-reaching.

I sent John a dozen roses on his graduation from from West Point. Wasn't that modern of me in 1969? We had broken up 2-1/2 ears before that. But I was just so in awe of his accomplishments. He called me and joined us on Cape Cod very soon thereafter. Five months later, he proposed and with Mrs. Weinberg's nudging, I left my BHS teaching post and married him prior to his leaving for Vietnam. It was a wonderful decision.

Do you remember Senior Trip when Jon punched the wall and broke his hand? Mr. S. had called him a liar - that was not ok!! I distinctly remember out in Fort Carson, CO, when Jon's Lt. Colonel said to him, following a disagreement, "Sir I hope you keep your high standards. I doubt it, but I hope so!" I know that Jon conducted every part of his life with the utmost integrity.

Jon and his best friend, Guy Hecter, went to Nam at the same time but to different areas. Guy's wife Elsie Lynn called me in October that year to say Guy had been killed. I knew him but not her. I told her I'd be on the next plane to Mississippi, her home. I felt compelled to be with her. I guess God makes good out of bad. After Guy's funeral, I went back to Elsie Lynn's house where she met me and informed me that Jon had been killed. It was good for us to be with each other at that point.

Afer Jon was killed I received an incredible number of testimonials. I hadn't been aware of his far-reaching influence - it was profound. He did receive the Silver Star, Bronze Star and of course the Purple Heart. Jon remained as you all remember him - a gentle, compassionate, humble, humorous and very intelligent man. We'll have o put him in charge of the greatest reunion.
